Malay Rulers’ role to be debated

The role of Malay Rulers in the country will be among the topics raised by Umno Youth delegates during their meeting at the Umno general assembly.

Umno Youth chief aspirants Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir agreed that the issue merited debate.

“It is regrettable that the system of Malay Rulers is now being questioned by some quarters and even sadder that there are Malays doing it.

“We shouldn’t be willing to destroy this system which we have upheld for so long merely because of political differences,” Dr Khir told a press conference at the state Umno building here yesterday.

Mukhriz, who was seated beside him, said the time had come for the issue to be discussed in the light of recent events.

He said the situation was cause for worry as some quarters chose to ignore concerns voiced by several Rulers recently.

Action should be taken against those who questioned the role of Malay Rulers, he added.
